BOLINGBROOK — Tailgaters Sports Bar and Grill is hosting a fundraiser for 4-year-old Katie Churulo from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday.
Generated proceeds from "Katie's Yellow Brick Road Benefit" will aid Katie and the Churulo family as their daughter battles HLH, a rare immune system disorder that involves over-production and activation of normal infection-fighting cells.
Currently, Katie's parents, Tom and Stephanie, are debating chemotherapy or immunosuppressant treatments. Katie might have to undergo a bone marrow transplant to fully cure the disease.
Additionally, Katie was born with a congenital heart defect and underwent open heart surgeries when she was 13 days old and 2-and-a-half years old.
Her current condition is unrelated to her congenital heart defect.
A majority of her HLH treatments must be done in Cincinati, Ohio, and the Stephanie and Tom Churulo have incurred extensive medical and hospital bills.
Tickets to Friday's event may be purchased at the Tailgaters door. Entry fee includes two drink tickets and appetizers, and a bags tournament, multiple raffles and silent auction will be held troughout the evening.
While all residents are welcome, event organizers remind everyone that Tailgaters is a bar, and owners and bartenders will kickout children about 9 p.m.
