Prep Roundup: Undefeated starts for Montini baseball, Willowbrook softball
Hinsdale South swept the Warriors in the opening West Suburban Gold series for both teams. The Warriors lost 3-0 and 3-1 in Saturday's doubleheader. Dave Cericola struck out seven batters in four-1/3 innings pitched, but got stuck with the loss in Game 1. In the second game, T.J. Case struck out five over five-2/3 innings and Dom Battaglia had two hits.
The Hornets won the series finale 10-1 on Monday in Villa Park. The Warriors, which beat Metea Valley 6-1 on Friday, will play Morton this weekend in another three-game set in the Gold.
The Broncos won their first three games of the season, including a win over Suburban Christian Conference-foe Marian Central. Montini beat Lisle 10-3 on March 28 and Peotone 2-1 on March 30. On Tuesday, they beat Marian 6-0 with a three-run home run from Austin Kline and five innings of one-hit ball from pitcher Ben Dobosenski
The Warriors swept Riverside Brookfield in a doubleheader on Friday. Willowbrook won 5-0 and 3-1.
The Broncos swept a doubleheader against Hinsdale South on Saturday. Montini won 5-2 and 11-3.
On Tuesday, they knocked off Addison Trail 8-1. Lauren Grojnar struck out 10 batters and Morganne Evans slammed a three-run home run against the Blazers.
Montini stayed on the winning path with a 12-2 victory over IC Catholic on Wednesday. Alyssa Sclafani had two home runs and Shaylee Lewis and Sara Ross each belted one.
Jess DeJong Brittany Paganucci both scored two goals in Saturday's 7-0 win over Fenton. Alex Ruffer, Kelly Ravenscraft and K.J. Nelson also tallied scores.
The Rams came up just short in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to five-time defending DuPage Valley Conference champion Naperville Central. Ruffer and DeJong scored the goals and goalkeeper Veronica Fairbairn made 17 saves. East led 1-0 at halftime and was tied 2-2 late in the second half before conceding a goal in the final 10 minutes.
Downers Grove South beat the Warriors 2-0 in the West Suburban Gold opener on Tuesday. Willowbrook beat Wheaton Academy 1-0 on Saturday.
The Rams returned from spring break with its DVC opener against Naperville Central on Tuesday. Central won in three games 25-20, 13-25, 25-15. Joey Farrell had 12 kills and junior Cory Soehren led the Rams with 12 assists.
The Warriors opened West Suburban Gold play with a 25-11, 25-15 against Hinsdale South on Tuesday. Jimmy Riordan had six kills and Ben Wozniak added five. Zac Prosek led Willowbrook with six blocks, Kyle Dewyer had 16 assists and Matt Maksymec had six digs.
The Blazers picked up back-to-back wins over Fenton (25-13, 25-14) and Proviso East (25-17, 25-13). Matt Hernet and Jon Valintini had five kills each in the win over Fenton.
Glenbard East, Willowbrook
The Rams opened their season with a 7-0 sweep of the rival Warriors on Tuesday. Nick Cornell, Nathan Delander and Shehdad Khundmiri picked up wins in singles for East. The Rams beat Montini 5-0 on Wednesday.
The Rams won the Ram 7 Invitational on Saturday with champions at five levels. Rachel Schlitter won at No. 1 singles and East placed in the top two on every level.
