Morton softball hands Lyons Township first loss
Costly errors doom Lions in 6-1 defeat
CICERO — Entering Friday’s game in Cicero, Lyons Township was 4-0 and Morton was coming off an 11-0 loss to Nazareth the day before.
Naturally, Morton picked up a decisive win against the Lions.
Mustang senior pitcher Alyssa Galasso needed just 90 pitches in a complete game effort in Morton’s 6-1 win.
The Mustangs broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third when Karina Madera came up with the bases loaded and cleared the bases on a dropped fly ball. Gabby King, Jenna Boyajian and Sue Ghuneim scored on the play.
Defense had been a strong point for the Lions during their four-game winning streak, but it cost them on Friday.
“We had errors and we haven’t seen errors since we played,” said LT coach Dawn Schabacker. “I think we’ve had one error or two errors in four games.”
Morton (4-2) bounced back nicely from the disappointing blowout loss to Nazareth on Thursday.
“I’m just happy for them because yesterday was really disheartening,” said Morton coach Tom Eukovich. “We’re going to build on that going into the conference because LT is always solid. They’re a good program and they’re well-coached.”
The Mustangs travel to Oak Lawn on Saturday while Lyons will play at Wheaton Warrenville South on Friday.
