Letter: D-86 Board should toss personal agendas

Published: Friday, April 5, 2013 2:55 p.m. CST

To the Editor: The Hinsdale school board election is on April 9. After years of tiring school board infighting, poor planning, overspending, lack of real transparency and a failure to exercise common sense principles, it is time for new leadership. After reviewing school board decisions over the past several years, I have concluded that change is in the air.

A new slate of three school board candidates, Manley, Casini and Corcoran, have proposed online, common-sense solutions to the problems that plague our current school board. Their solutions bring order out of chaos by collaboration with students, parents, teachers and taxpayers, not mandating personal agendas and spending our tax dollars needlessly.

Manley, Casini and Corcoran want to reform the school board and based on their previous accomplishments, I believe they can. I asked myself whether the current board has fairly served our school community – not by spending $15 million taxpayer dollars on air-conditioning without even a referendum, not by barring parental input on school curricula and not by allowing our special education program to fall below state standards.

Now, more than ever, we need fiscal responsibility, fresh ideas, respectable leadership credentials, common-sense values and ideals, real transparency for the taxpayers and parents and fairness in any bidding process – all focusing on providing an educational experience second to none. It's time to vote for like-minded advocates of the Hinsdale School District 86 students. What we need is a vote on April 9 from our entire community for Manley, Casini and Corcoran.
