Letter: Change in leadership needed in D-86

Published: Friday, April 5, 2013 2:53 p.m. CST

To the Editor: On March 1, I requested from Superintendent Nick Wahl copies of any documents prepared by financial advisers, our business office, law firm, or anyone else who makes any kind of financial analysis for the newly approved amendments to the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Teachers' Contract.

One week later, March 8, I received an email from Wahl in regards to my request. He referred me to the meeting agenda of Feb. 25, items XV & XVII. Item XV was adjournment to closed session; Item XVII(A) is, "Ratification of Teacher Contract Settlement."

In short — given an entire week, Wahl was unable to provide me with a single document, from within the district or from any of its outside consultants, analyzing the terms of the contract's financial impact on District 86. The review of terms in closed session is a confidential communication, but I can say it was unaccompanied by any documents (except the revised agreement itself), nor did it attempt to analyze in any detail, the financial impact to the district.

I voted against this agreement due to the fact there was no analysis to the district, no details provided to the board prior to the meeting, leaving only 30 minutes to make an informed decision and lastly, the board's refusal to disclose the agreement's terms to the public before voting.

I was appalled at the blatant irresponsibility of the board majority in representing you, the taxpayers. Three members who are seeking re-election were in that majority including the finance chair, board president and board secretary. It's time for real leadership and a change in the board. Vote April 9: Claudia Manley, Victor Casini, Ed Corcoran and Roger Kempa.
