Village to sell rain barrels at discounted price this spring

DOWNERS GROVE — The village of Downers Grove and The Conservation Foundation are partnering to sell rain barrels at a discount this spring.

The sale features 55-gallon plastic barrels and rain barrel accessories.

Rain barrels are large containers that capture rainwater at the end of a downspout and store the water for later uses including watering plants or washing cars.

Using water from rain barrels lowers water bills, helps reduce flooding and can have a dramatic impact on water quality in rivers and streams, according to the village.

As part of the stormwater utility, the village has an incentive program to encourage residents to install rain barrels on their property. Qualifying properties will be provided a one-time reduction of $25 per property, to be applied toward the stormwater utility portion of a customer's utility bill.

The 55-gallon barrels are made from reused plastic and come equipped with a spigot, a screw off lid, a garden hose threaded overflow and a screen in the top to help keep out bugs and debris.

Residents and businesses can choose from four colors in 55-gallon plastic — terra cotta, grey, black or blue.

For those who pick up the barrel in person, the cost per barrel is $58.50, plus sales tax.

For home delivery, the cost per barrel is $63.50, plus sales tax.

There are also optional add-ons, including installation by trained professionals included with delivery for $20.

Accessories such as a wooden pedestal base to support the rain barrel and flexible downspouts are also available.

For self pick-up, the order deadline is May 10. Barrels can be picked up from 3 to 6 p.m. May 17 at the Public Works Facility at 5101 Walnut Ave.

Home delivery orders will be accepted through the end of 2013.
