NEDSRA hosts basketball fundraiser on Sunday
ADDISON — The Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association’s Jr. Bulls, a wheelchair basketball team for youths with disabilities, will play in a fundraising exhibition game against the Addison Police Department on Sunday. The Jr. Bulls are trying to raise money to offset travel costs as they travel to Louisville, Ken., for the National Wheelchair Basketball Association championship tournament.
This year’s tournament is comprised of 34 junior wheelchair basketball teams and will be April 18 to 20. The Jr. Bulls currently are ranked 26th out of 34 teams nationally.
Adam Kramer, the Jr. Bulls coach, said this is the first time in over a decade that the team has been invited to the national tourney.
“We have not been this competitive over the past few years. This invitation is a real compliment to our players who have worked hard to earn it,” Kramer said.
The exhibition game will pit the eight coed Jr. Bulls players against Addison police officers and other public employees.
Local residents Nick Trojanowicz, Melissa Schaefer and Ryan Glatchak will hone their basketball skills against these older players.
“I am preparing the team for this national competition, which has the best wheelchair basketball players from around the country. We need to compete at a high level to earn our invitation,” Kramer said.
Kramer has been coaching the Jr. Bulls for the past four years and is the recreation coordinator of adaptive sports for NEDSRA.
The exhibition game will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Addison Trail High School, 213 N. Lombard Road, Addison. Ticket donations are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and youths. Children under age 6 are free.
A “split-the-pot” raffle will take place as well as the tennis ball toss at half-time. For more information about the team or to donate, contact Kramer by calling 630-746-6551 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
