St. Charles community working together to collect books for at-risk children ST CHARLES - St. Charles is working together on a book drive to children's books for Bernie Bernie's Book Bank, a non-profit that collects, processes and redistributes quality children's books to at-risk children across the Chicago area.
The book drive is being facilitated by Amy Kappele, lifelong St. Charles resident, literacy teacher for St. Charles School District and longtime supporter of Bernie's Book Bank.
"I was hooked from the moment I walked in Bernie's Book Bank and saw books overflowing from the sorting bins," said Kappele. "I knew I had found a place that could change lives! As a reading specialist, I see the impact that book ownership can have on a child's life....from the words that fill their minds, the creativity and imagination that shapes their ideas and the joy they have when they can call a book their own."
A goal for the school district has been set at 30,000 books. Books can be dropped at any St. Charles District 303 school, the St. Charles Park District, St. Charles Public Library, Blue Goose Market, Dick Pond's Running Store, Aquascape or Townhouse Books and Cafe. The drive will run April 1 through April 12.
Bar foundation honors local attorney for helping those in need The Kane County Bar Foundation has honored Kane County Bar Association member Sandra Parga, who has selflessly donated countless, uncompensated hours to serving those in need in the community, with its Pro Bono Award. Nominations are made by peers and court personnel and winners are those who have worked tirelessly to expand access to justice for the poor and less fortunate. Parga has been a dedicated volunteer for Prairie State Legal Services, and has been involved in the Kane County Pro Bono Program since 2006. In addition to accepting many individual pro bono cases, Parga has conducted 19 Pro Se Clinics, allowing more than 100 individuals to gain access and learn more about the legal system. Since Parga is bilingual in English and Spanish, she was able to lead the clinics in Spanish, making the law more accessible for non-English speakers. All of these cases were divorces, and many of the clients were victims of family violence.
