Prep Roundup: Nazareth baseball off to undefeated start

Roadrunners pick up four shutouts in 5-0 start

BASEBALL
Nazareth
The Roadrunners are off to another hot start to the season, winning their first four games and not allowing a run. Nazareth beat IC Catholic 8-0 on March 26 with five pitchers contributing to the shutout. After that, Nazareth traveled to Kentucky for a spring break trip. They beat Butler 6-0 in Louisville. Jake Bartels and Joe Nelson combined for a three-hit shutout. The Roadrunners swept a doubleheader against Holy Cross, 3-0 and 8-0. Peter Minella picked up the win in Game 1 and Mike Kogut struck out 10 batters over five innings in Game 2. On Monday the Roadrunners returned to La Grange Park with an 8-1 win over Kenwood.

St. Joseph The Chargers opened the season with a 5-2 win over Proviso West on Thursday. Ryan Moritz earned the win on the mound with nine strikeouts over four innings.

Luke Daughenbaugh had two hits in the Chargers' 6-2 win over Ridgewood on Saturday.

Proviso West After losing to St. Joseph 5-2 on Thursday, the Panthers went right into conference play with a doubleheader at Hinsdale Central. The Red Devils got the sweep, winning 14-0 and 20-2.

SOFTBALL
Fenwick
The Friars won their first three games of the season before losing to Mother McAuley on Saturday. Jenna Cairo hit a home run in Fenwick's 19-0 win over St. Joseph in five innings March 26.

The next day it took extra innings for the Friars to beat Riverside Brookfield, but a five-run eighth inning opened the game in a 5-0 win. Ashley Parenti was 4-for-5 and Jess Mrozek gave up just three hits over the eight innings. On Thursday, the Friars romped Prosser 18-0 in five innings.

McAuley ended Fenwick's winning streak with an 11-2 decision. The Friars led 3-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, but the pitching and defense fell apart that inning.

Nazareth After losing to Downers Grove North 5-0 on March 26, the Roadrunners got back on track with a 14-1, five-inning demolition of Riverside Brookfield. Karah Ritacco was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, and Lindsay Zasadzinski went 2-for-3 with a triple. The 4-1 Roadrunners host Glenbard East on Wednesday.

GIRLS SOCCER
Lyons Township
The Lions tied 1-1 at Lincoln-Way North on Saturday for their second consecutive draw.

Morton Oak Park-River Forest knocked off the Mustangs 2-1 on March 26. Then Fenwick came to Berwyn and beat Morton 4-1. The Friars led 1-0 at halftime before scoring three times early in the second half. Briana Keska scored on a hard shot from outside the box for Morton's only goal. The Mustangs headed into Tuesday's conference opener at Hinsdale South with an 0-4 record.

Fenwick The Friars remained undefeated on the season with road wins over Joliet Catholic and Morton. Fenwick beat JCA 5-2 on March 26 and topped the Mustangs 4-1 last Thursday. The Friars are 6-0-1 heading into Thursday's showdown with crosstown-rival Oak Park-River Forest.

Nazareth The Roadrunners opened East Suburban Catholic play with a 2-1 win at Providence Catholic on March 26. Erica Morges scored a first-half goal to tie the score at 1-1, and freshman Kelly Renehan scored the game-winner in the second half.

Riverside Brookfield The Bulldogs lost a pair of matches at St. Francis' Springfest Classic on March 26. York beat RB 5-0 in the morning, and St. Francis edged past the Bulldogs 1-0. Both matches were played with 30-minutes halves at Schaumburg's Olympic Park.

RB fell to 1-6 on the season after a 7-0 loss to Hinsdale Central on Saturday.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Riverside Brookfield
The Bulldogs picked up a spring break win over Illiana Christian on March 27. Jake Fieseler had five aces and a team-high eight digs in the 25-14, 25-17 win. Tim Thor-Larsen had six kills, and Mike Chaney added three. Danny Nava had 10 assists.

BOYS WATER POLO
Riverside Brookfield
RB fell to Bremen 9-7 on Thursday to fall to 1-8 on the season. The Bulldogs host Lane Tech at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

GIRLS WATER POLO
Lyons Township, Morton
LT beat Morton 11-8 on the road on Thursday to improve to 7-3 on the season. The Lions will host rival Hinsdale Central at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Morton is also 7-3 and will travel to Hinsdale South at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Riverside Brookfield RB topped Lincoln-Way West 13-10 on March 27. Allie Shumowsky scored five goals and Sydney Veon had four. Caitlin Parisi had 14 blocks in goal.

BADMINTON
Morton, Riverside Brookfield
Riverside Brookfield hosted the four-team RB Invite on Saturday. The hosts took third with nine points. Morton was second with 11 points, finishing behind only Homewood-Flossmoor. RB's doubles teams of Erica Fong/Izzi Cain, Alex Bakalich/Erika Sterner and Katie Buckley/Rebecca Rusiecki earned second-place finishes.
