Lombard cop car that brought McIlroy to Ryder Cup sells for more than $7K on eBay
LOMBARD — Bidding ended Monday afternoon and $7,351 was the sale price on a 2005 Ford Crown Vic that was used when Pat Rollins, Lombard's deputy police chief, drove professional golfer Rory McIlroy to the Ryder Cup last summer.
The car went up for auction last week and had 42 bids, spread out among 19 bidders.
Rollins' car, which has 89,900 miles, was scheduled for replacement this year, so the village decided to place it up for auction on eBay with the idea of attracting a sports enthusiast to purchase the car for more than its trade-in price.
During the summer golf competition, McIlroy mistakenly thought his tee time for the Ryder Cup was an hour later than it actually was, so the Northern Ireland native was rushed to Medinah Country Club by Rollins.
McIlroy was staying at the Westin Hotel and Conference Center and, when he realized his mistake, contacted the Lombard Police Department. Rollins drove McIlroy in this 2005 Ford Crown Vic and brought the golfer to the course with only a few minutes before he teed off.
The Europeans later went on to win the tournament, largely thanks to McIlroy's performance.
