Boys track and field previews: Lisle builds around all-conference middle distance athletes

Ben Buchelt, Jefferson Chan and Ryan Kilroy return to 4 x 800 relay, while Benet looks to claim top honors in East Suburban Catholic Conference.

The goal for track and field athletes is to compete at the state meet. Those goals are already in motion as the gun has gone off on the 2013 outdoor season.

Lisle

Coach: Ken Jakalski

Top returners:

Ben Buchelt, jr., (middle distance)

Jefferson Chan, jr., (middle distance)

Kyle Hendzel, jr., (middle distance)

Ryan Kilroy, sr., (middle distance)

Ian Parks, jr., (jumps)Nick Rizzoti, sr., (sprints/hurdles)

JD Webb, so., (jumps)

What to watch: Middle distance is a particular strength for the Lions, who bring back Interstate Eight all-conference athletes in the 4 x 800-meter relay in the form of Ben Buchelt, Jefferson Chan and Ryan Kilroy.

Lisle loses several pieces of last year’s sprint relays, but head coach Ken Jakalski expects freshman Adam Harris to provide a boost in that area. Ian Parks and JD Webb in jumps provide strength off the track.

The Lions were shut out of last year’s state meet, but Jakalski believes they should rebound nicely this year and compete with Westmont, Herscher, Plano and Sandwich for the Interstate Eight Conference title.

“We have a shot at the top three in the conference, and maybe our best chance to win in years,” the coach said. “Even though we graduated many key sprinters from last year’s team, we should be even better this spring.”

Benet

Coach: Pat Marshall

What to watch: Starting with Saturday’s St. Charles East invite, the Redwings will be tested throughout their invite season, which includes stops at Naperville North (April 12) and Hinsdale South (April 26).

Benet, which finished second at the East Suburban Catholic Conference meet last spring, will look to get over the hump and win it on May 5 before the May 17 sectional meet.
