Lyons Township junior pitcher Ashley Koziol winds up to deliver a pitch during a game against Riverside-Brookfield on Saturday, March 30, 2013.

WESTERN SPRINGS — After a month of practicing inside the Lyons Township softball team started the season with a doubleheader sweep of Riverside Brookfield.

Before Saturday's games the Lions had not yet been on a dirt field, let alone play a game. LT came away with 6-1 and 7-6 wins over the Bulldogs, which are off to a stunning 0-7 start.

“I’m very happy to start out this way," said LT coach Dawn Schabacker. "I didn’t know what was going to happen with the field and the players being on dirt for the first time, but they really did a nice job.”

Junior Ashley Koziol, new as the top pitcher this season, got the win in game 1 and limited an RB offense that has struggled with the bats so far this season.

Koziol is replacing her older sister, Alyssa, as LT's No. 1. The younger Koziol is very aware of what that spot means.

“It definitely puts a lot on my shoulders and I think carrying the team is going to be a challenge, but I’ll get through it," Koziol said. "Me and my sister have been competing since we were little and I’m definitely trying to beat her from last year.”

On the other side, RB is winless in seven games with an offense that has scored more than one run just twice. It's something RB coach John Vermillion has yet to figure out.

“We’ve been snake bit in a lot of ways,” said RB coach John Vermillion. “Teams go through this every once in a while.”

Game one pitcher Katie O'Connell held back LT other than a six-run third inning. Jasmine Castaneda hit a lead off home run to start game two.

Becky Ryckman picked up the win on the mound in game two and contributed to the offense as LT's lead off hitter.
