Big tests await Mustangs after 2-0 start
CICERO — The first week of the season didn’t test the Morton softball team much, but the week ahead expects to bring much more challenge to the Mustangs.
Morton beat De La Salle 11-3 on March 26 and Lincoln Park 8-0 on Thursday to start the season 2-0.
Pitcher Alyssa Galasso played a starring role for the Mustangs in both games. She went the distance in both victories and limited Lincoln Park to one hit while striking out 10. In the season opener, Galasso had three strikeouts and three walks, letting the defense behind her do its job.
“She’s around the plate, she doesn’t strike a lot of people out, but she keeps you in the game,” said coach Tom Eukovich. “She lets the other team hit and we played good defense.”
In the offensive show against De La Salle, catcher Jenna Boyajian went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Gabby King and Toni Franta each went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
The Mustangs have two more weeks of preparation before beginning conference play in the West Suburban Gold. Morton visits Addison Trail on April 17.
In the meantime, Eukovich will see his team tested with a run of games against quality opposition, including match-ups with Nazareth and Lyons Township.
“This is going to be a tough week for us,” Eukovich said. “We’ll see really how good we are playing. Naz and LT are way above average so this week will kind of get us ready I think for the conference.”
On Wednesday, the Mustangs will travel to Shepard followed by home games against Nazareth and LT before a Saturday trip to Oak Lawn.
