Boys track and field previews: Willowbrook looking to crack top three in WSC Gold
Addison Trail, Montini and Glenbard East also feature strong relay teams
Coach: Jack Brady
Vince Booth jr. (mid. distance)
Brad Busching, sr. (distance)
Jovan Newsum, sr. (distance)
Jack Peters, jr. (mid. distance)
Vince Singer, sr. (sprints)
Tim Swanson, sr. (distance)
What to watch: The Rams will find it hard to compete in the DuPage Valley Conference, but they do have a number of quality athletes.
Jack Peters and Vince Booth are both state hopefuls in the 800.
East’s 4 x 400-meter relay, which qualified for state last year, was second at the DVC indoor meet with a time of 3:32.50. That time is already near the state-qualifying mark, impressive for the indoor season.
Coach: Chris Andriano
Logan Goss, sr. (sprints)
Michael Hollingshed, so. (sprints)
Mike Spangler, sr. (sprints)
Dimitri Taylor, sr. (sprints)
What to watch: The Broncos don’t have a big team in terms of numbers, but their 4 x100- and 4 x 200-meter relays should be very competitive.
Mike Spangler, Logan Goss and Dimitri Taylor return from the 4 x 100 relay that qualified for state last year. Sophomore Michael Hollingshed is expected to join the relays.
Spangler will anchor both sprint relays and is the Broncos’ best chance for an individual state qualifier.
Coach: Bruce Kelsay
Joe Atria, sr. (distance)
Anthony Guzman, sr. (sprints)
Kevin Otte, sr. (distance)
Steve Pudelek, sr. (sprints)
Trey Smith, jr. (sprints)
Javier Valdez, jr. (mid. distance)
What to watch: The Blazers have just four seniors on the roster, but all four are key parts of the team.
Joe Atria has the school record in the 1,600-meter run and won the indoor conference title in that event. He is the Blazers’ best chance for an individual state qualifier.
Kevin Otte joined Atria on the West Suburban Gold indoor champion 4 x 800 relay team.
Anthony Guzman and Steve Pudelek are parts of the sprint relay teams.
Juniors Javier Valdez and Trey Smith should also score points regularly for the Blazers. Valdez won the 600 at indoor conference and Smith has a chance to qualify for state in the 100 and 200.
Coach: T.J. Artman
Matt Burns, jr. (sprints)
Tim Hyde, sr. (distance)
Matt McNamara, sr. (throws)
Zach Stubbs, sr. (mid. distance)
What to watch: After finishing fourth in the West Suburban Gold indoor meet, the Warriors are hoping to crack the top three in the outdoor season.
Matt Burns won an indoor conference title in the 400 and was third in the 200 and high jump and could be the team’s best chance of a state qualifier.
Junior varsity newcomers to watch include Hayden Adams (triple jump), Jake Bloemke (sprints and jumps) and Dylan Jones (sprints).
