Boys track and field previews: Lyons, RB led by returning state qualifiers

Morton also hopes to push for the top in the West Suburban Gold

Lyons Township

Coach: Mike Tanner

Jimmy Mitchell sr. discus

Lino Mogorovic sr. sprints, hurdles

What to watch:

After finishing second in the long jump at state last year, Matt Harris will be hoping to improve on that result. The football star also qualified for state in the 110-meter high hurdles and competed with the 4 x 100 relay that brings back all four runners.

One of those relay returners, Lino Mogorovic, is also a returning individual state qualifier. Juniors Giovanni Young and Quentin Sanchez could team with the senior pair to make one of the best relays in the state.

Alex Lima and Jimmy Mitchell are also state returners.

Sprinters Matt Grider, Antwan Swan and Jimmy Rhode medaled at the West Suburban Silver indoor meet and should also score plenty of points for the Lions, which open the outdoor season at the Hinsdale Central Relays on Saturday.

Coach: Rob Anderson

Top returners:

Alan Casallo jr. pole vault

Bryan Casallo jr. pole vault

Mateo Hernandez jr. distance

Omero Montalvo sr. distance

What to watch:

Omero Montalvo has a full ride to St. Francis thanks to his distance-running ability. The senior won the 3,200-meter run at the West Suburban Gold indoor meet and will also earn Morton points in the 1,600.

Mateo Hernandez finished right behind Montalvo in the 3,200 in the indoor conference meet, and, according to coach Rob Anderson, both have a good chance to qualify for state.

Bryan Casallo and Alan Casallo took the top two spots in the pole vault at the indoor meet and will also be hoping to make state. That group, along with shot putter Jesse Zermeno, helped the Mustangs take second in the team standings.

"We have a chance to get those guys down individually as well as relays as far as state," Anderson said. "We'll try to carry the same momentum forward into the outdoor season."

Marvin McKenzie got a taste of state after competing in the 400-meter dash and the 4 x 400 relay as a freshman. With another year under his belt, bigger things will be expected. He won an indoor conference title in the 55-meter dash.

Junior Lewis Rogers and senior Andrew Bell are also back from the state-qualifying 4 x 400 relay.

Jack VandeMerkt won an indoor title in the Metro Suburban Conference in the high jump. Junior Dan Curtin and senior David Swon will also be pushing for conference titles and state-qualifying berths.

Coach: Casey Moran

Top returners:

Zachery Manual sr. long jump

Edward Egan sr. 800

Jack Higgins sr. hurdles

Patrick Yerkes sr. distance

What to watch:

Patrick Yerkes is the lone state qualifier to return this year after making it in the 3,200-meter run last spring. The Friar senior was third in the 3,200 at the Chicago Cathoilc League Indoor Championships behind a pair of fast times from St. Ignatius runners, including La Grange Park resident Jack Keelan, and second behind Keelan in the 1,600.

After showing good times at the CCL indoor meet, Edward Egan, Jack Higgins and Matthew Dumon will be pushing to make the trip to state with Yerkes.
