Glenn Morgan returns to bolster York's field events.

York

Coach: Stan Reddel

Top returners:

Alex Bashqawi, jr. (distance)

Shawn John, sr. (pole vault)

Chris May, sr. (distance)

Scott Milling, sr. (distance)

Nathan Mroz, jr. (distance)

What to watch: As usual, the Dukes are very strong in distance races. Four cross country runners — Alex Bashqawi, Chris May, Scott Milling and Nathan Mroz — will help York be a force in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.

May, Milling and Mroz were state qualifiers last year. Milling especially should be a contender in the 3,200.

Sophomore Matt Plowman and senior Jack Achen also return as part of the state-qualifying 4 x 800 relay.

Pole vaulter Shawn John will try to replace state champion Nick Sgarbossa. John was a state qualifier last year as well.

Other field event athletes that showed well at the West Suburban Silver indoor meet were Curt Thieme (pole vault), Reid Smith (high jump), Glenn Morgan (shot put) and Suraj Varghese (triple jump).

Timothy Christian

Coach: John VanderKamp

Top returners:

Jake Hooker, sr. (hurdles)

Rich Medina, sr. (sprints)

What to watch: Jake Hooker qualified for state in both the 300-meter hurdles and 110 hurdles last year. The senior also contributed to the 4 x 100 relay that made state. Rich Medina is also back from that relay team.

IC Catholic

Coach: Bob Cronin

Top returners:

Sean Fenton, sr. (throws)

Tim Hipskind, sr. (sprints)

Phillip Roberto, so. (distance)

Sam Rose, jr. (sprints)

What to watch: Coach Bob Cronin said he wants the team to get an individual and a relay to qualify for state this year.

The best candidates for the individual spot are sprinters Tim Hipskind and Sam Rose along with Sean Fenton in the shot put and discus.

The 4 x 400 relay is the Knights’ best relay. Brian Anzures, Arturo Chaidez, Alphonso Gibbs, Silvestre Saucedo and Aaron Taylor are battling to get on that team.
