Letter to the Editor: Resident responds to license plate fee gripe

Published: Wednesday, March 27, 2013 1:20 p.m. CDT

In response to Joyce Truby’s March 13 letter about why license renewal fees don’t vary, the answer is that the State of Illinois already can’t operate in an efficient manner in most cases.

Asking it to monitor mileage along with car sizes in order to offer different tiers of license renewal fees would add too much bureaucracy and cost to the Department of Motor Vehicles. It’s unrealistic, so a one-size-fits-all price for license renewal is what’s in place.

Additionally, there shouldn’t be any “senior citizen rate” for license renewal.

The State of Illinois is approaching bankruptcy and simply getting old doesn’t entitle a person to government handouts on the taxpayer dime.

Unless there is sudden support for everyone in the workforce paying the majority of their earnings in taxes, the government flat-out can’t afford those types of entitlements anymore.
