Letter to the Editor: Letter endorses Democratic candidates for township
To the Editor:
Incumbent Republican candidates for Downers Grove Township government recently distributed a mailing to local residents under the banner of "ticket for the taxpayer."
The materials distributed are seriously lacking some truthful facts which include acknowledging that these incumbents have increased the township tax levy each year and plan to continue increasing the maximum levy allowed by the tax cap because "that's the way they have always done it."
They have passed budgets without making efforts to assess the current merit(s) of specific budget items; trustees are paid to meet once a month for 30 minutes or less; and other salaried representatives have reduced time spent on conducting township business by 50 percent and taken only a 20 percent cut in pay.
The Democratic candidates for township offices are all professionals who reside and work in the area.
They have diligently attended township meetings for years and are knowledgeable about the actions needed to help us improve our position through better fiscal management and assessment of effective program services.
Collectively, our Democratic candidates will work to:
- Create a long-range plan for the township which will include assets and resources that are needed and exclude those that are not.
- Pledge to use "zero-based budgeting" looking at each budget item and assessing its need.
- Pledge to engage in a fair and appropriate bidding process.
- Pledge to bring township governance back to its core mission.
It's Time for Positive Change and I believe these Democratic candidates will bring the change needed for our township: Karol Sole for supervisor, Christopher English for highway commissioner, Christine Hotchkin for clerk, Megan Schroeder and James Boyce for trustees.
