Trustee Breen testifys in Springfield on government transparency bill

Published: Tuesday, March 26, 2013 5:30 p.m. CST

LOMBARD — Peter Breen, District 4 trustee for Lombard, was in Springfield last week to deliver testimony to the House Counties and Townships Committee on a bill that would require local government transparency throughout the state.

House Bill 3312 is similar to transparency policy that Lombard's Village Board of Trustees passted in 2011, an effort that was spearheaded by Breen. If this bill passes, local governments will be required to post salaries, spending, budgets, contracts, contact information for elected officials and other documents on their websites.

Breen was invited to testify by the Illinois Policy Institute, the organization leading the effort to pass House Bill 3312.

The committee voted, 5-0, to advance the bill to the full House of Representatives.

"Folks want to know how the government is spending their tax dollars and this bill will ensure that every dollar is accounted for in full view of the public," Breen said. "I'm proud that Lombard is leading the way in reforming government."
