Prep roundup: Naz softball gets season underway with 4-0 start

LT boys volleyball takes Conant Invitational title

Most teams haven't been able to get a game in yet, but the Roadrunners are 4-0. Nazareth beat Chicago Christian and Reavis 2-1 last week. Mary Grace Chizewski had both RBIs against Chicago Christian, and Holly Haberkorn was 2-for-3 with a triple. Haberkorn and Lindsay Zasadzinski combined for a one-hitter against Reavis while Cat Gutierrez and Colleen McGivney each had two hits. On Monday they beat St. Ignatius 5-3 with two hits and two runs from Karah Ritacco.

Riverside Brookfield
RB picked up its first win of the season by beating Proviso West 1-0 on March 20. That win was sandwiched by 5-0 losses to Oak Park-River Forest and Maine South.

Fenwick The Friars tied Mother McAuley 1-1 on Saturday. Sydney Jensen scored Fenwick's goal.

Lyons Township
The Lions took home the title from the Conant Invitational by beating Lake Park 25-16, 27-26 in the final on Friday. LT went 2-1 in pool play with wins over Westminster Christian (25-11, 25-13) and Stevenson (25-11, 25-18) and a loss to Highland Park (22-25, 25-19, 17-16). LT opened the season March 19 with a 25-18, 25-21 win over Morton. The Lions are 4-1 heading into spring break.

Fenwick The season opened with losses to Mt. Carmel (25-11, 30-28) and Lane Tech (25-18, 25-15) and followed up with a 1-4 record at the Joliet West Invite.

Proviso West The Panthers opened up 3-0 to start the season with wins over St. Joseph (25-9, 25-16), Nazareth (27-25, 25-21) and IMSA (25-14, 25-18). West failed to place in the top six at the Plainfield North Invite over the weekend.

Lyons Township
Wins over Lincoln-Way East (12-4) and Stagg (18-7) moved LT's record to 6-1. They host Morton on Thursday in a West Suburban Conference match.

Morton The Mustangs fell to Oak Park-River Forest 15-6 on March 20. The Mustangs travel to LT for a conference match on Thursday.

Fenwick The Friars beat St. Viator 13-10 to start the season 10-0.

Lyons Township
The Lions beat Stagg (20-8) and Bremen (14-5) before losing to Winter Park from Florida during the week. On Saturday, they hosted an invitational and beat Waubonsie Valley (14-3) and Mundelein (9-5) to advance to the final, where LT fell to Stevenson 11-4.

Fenwick The Friars beat Stevenson 14-6 and Marian Catholic 16-2. The undefeated team will travel to Florida for a tournament during spring break this week.

Riverside Brookfield RB picked up wins over Resurrection (17-10) and Hinsdale South (10-3) before going 1-2 at the Lincoln-Way East Invite. The Bulldogs beat Lincoln-Way West 12-10 before losing to Lincoln-Way Central 16-6 and the hosts 8-5. Sydney Veon scored 11 goals during the week and Emma Veon scored nine. RB is 6-6 on the season.

Morton The Mustangs beat Richards 11-5 on March 20 to improve to 7-2 on the season.

Proviso West
Facing a number of top programs at Proviso East's Midwest Classic on Saturday, the Panthers still managed a top-three finish in the 4 x 200-meter relay. Jamaal Payton, Anthony Dorsey, Byron Jackson and Marquise Kinsey ran a time of 1:35.08 to take third. Louis Brown was West's other top finisher, placing sixth in the 200.

Lyons Township
The Lions lost a dual to rival Hinsdale Central 148.2-142.9 on March 20. Sophomore Chris Rediehs tied for first on the parallel bars with a 9.0. Rediehs was second in the all-around with a 50.3 total.

Morton Yasmin Lopez, Paulina Guzman and Vanessa Patnaude all scored singles points for the Mustangs at Glenbard East's Ram Invitational to help Morton tie for fourth in the eight-team event. On Monday the Mustangs knocked off Riverside Brookfield 8-7 in a dual.

Riverside Brookfield RB tied for fourth out of eight teams at Glenbard East's Ram Invitational, which combined the varsity and junior varsity teams. Erica Fong was third at No. 3 varsity singles. First-year player Stephanie Taccola was a finalist at JV No. 2 singles. Katie Buckley and Miranda Molina were third at JV No. 1 doubles.

Lyons Township
LT improved to 6-0 on the season with a 3-0 showing at its own invitational on Saturday. The Lions picked up wins over Schaumburg (11-6), St. Charles East (5-3) and Wheaton North (10-1).

On Saturday, junior running back Robert Spillane committed to continue his career at Western Michigan.
