Humphrey chess team performs well at state finals

BOLINGBROOK — Humphrey Middle School’s eighth-grade chess team took eighth in the state, while the seventh-graders finished 15th in the state at last weekend’s Illinois Elementary School Association’s state finals in Normal.

Top finishers for Humphrey’s eighth-grade team included Jacob Golden, 13th on Board 1; John Masek, ninth on Board 2; Simon Northrip, ninth on Board 3; Andrew Phanor, sixth on Board 4; and Vicente Abundez, 27th on Board 5.

Top seventh-grade finishers were Erick Ramirez, 16th on Board 1; Ethan O’Brien, 26th on Board 2; and Kaylyn Yang, 18th on Board 4.

Other members of the Humphrey team are Tyanua Hunt, Lily O’Brien, Carter Odum, Mike Davis and Rob Masek.

Daniel Wright Middle School of Lincolnshire won both the seventh- and eighth-grade team championships.
