LOMBARD — On February 28, Montini Catholic High School and its varsity football team was honored by Sports Faith International, a Chicago-based initiative that helps promote excellence in athletics and devotion to the Catholic faith.

Montini Catholic and Aurora Christian high schools were honored together for the partnership the schools forged during the 2012 football season as they came together to support Johnny Weiger, a sophomore at Montini, and his family.

Weiger was a football player at Montini Catholic and, as a freshman, was diagnosed with a rare from of leukemia. He died on Nov. 8, 2012.

The schools were honored during Sports Faith International's Hall of Fame Induction ceremony Feb. 28 at the Chicago Bears Walter Payton Center.

"Montini Catholic and Aurora Christian not only supported one another, but they also helped and supported the Weiger family emotionally, financially and spiritually in very difficult times," said Patrick McCaskey, at the induction ceremony. "Both schools are great examples of winning championships with sportsmanship."
