DOWNERS GROVE — DuPage County Sheriff's officials detonated what was believed to have been an unexploded mortar round — but proved to be a dud — in Downers Grove on Friday morning.

According to police, the individual was hosting a garage sale and was told by a patron that the device on display could be a live explosive.

The individual was en route to the Downers Grove police department when officers responded about 9:30 a.m. to the 6500 block of Fairview Avenue. They located the device in the car, confirmed it appeared to be a mortar shell, and called in the bomb squad. The mortar was removed and destroyed by the DuPage County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad, and officials determined it was not a live explosive.

"The process resulted in a loud noise that could be heard throughout the area," a Downers Grove police press release stated. "Area residents were notified of this incident and every precaution was taken to ensure the safety of the public."
