Downers Grove

Thanks to those who attended township open house

A dreary cold rainy afternoon could not stop residents from attending our fourth annual Local Government Week: Open House on
March 9.

The doors opened to reveal the inner workings of township government. The township supervisor, elected officials and staff, along with senior and youth volunteers, greeted residents with the aroma of grilled hot dogs, chips and beverages. More than 200 residents attended.

Residents could view colorful backdrops and displays that highlighted township programs.  Additionally, residents could apply for passports and RTA cards. The DuPage Sheriff, Illinois Student Assistance Corp and FISH Pantry (located in the township building basement) also shared information and resources.

Visitors were further informed of our two new not-for-profit groups — “Oak Hill and Oak Crest Cemeteries Foundation” and “Friends of Downers Grove Township Senior Citizens.”

The Cemeteries Foundation will provide for restoration of our two historic cemeteries.

The Senior Citizens Foundation will seek to enhance the quality of lives for older adults by acting as a resource for funding programs, services, education and information.

Visitors to our highway department, which maintains the township’s unincorporated roads, shared positive feedback about work completed throughout the year, which included: the curb and gutter program, brush pick-up and paving.

Brush pick-up begins April 1 and runs through May 11. Call the highway office or check our website for pick-up in your area.

The highway department’s biggest success is the Electronic Recycling Program. Since 2009, 174,788 pounds — 87 tons — of recycled electronics have been received. That equates to the weight of 14 elephants.

Every year, the open house offers another opportunity for recycling at our township location. Normal drop-off is every third Saturday of the month from 8 a.m. to noon (except holiday weekends) at the Highway Garage, 318 E. Quincy St. in Westmont.

The Assessor’s Office was pleased with residents’ interest in their department. Their friendly staff created informational displays, answered questions and allowed residents to view their parcels. Their quest was to make a sometimes-confusing process more understandable for the general public.

Call us at 630-719-6600 with questions, or visit The FISH Pantry can be reached by calling Ruth Anderson at 630-964-7776.

The 2014 Open House will be held on Saturday, March 8. Hope to see you then.

Frank Wurster is supervisor of Downers Grove Township, which includes Downers Grove, Westmont, Hinsdale, Darien and parts of Woodridge
