ELMHURST — After needing to replace almost all of last year's goal scoring, the York girls soccer team hasn't had any trouble scoring in its first two matches.

The Dukes opened with a 2-2 draw at Benet on March 14 and followed up with a 3-0 win against Downers Grove North two days later.

York fell behind in the opening minutes against the Redwings before Jamie Kovatchis leveled the match with a goal from outside the box. The Dukes trailed 2-1 at halftime and for much of the second half until Bryce Banuelos scored with less than 10 minutes left in the match.

Benet is usually a competitive program so to pick up a result on the road was an acceptable way to start the season for York.

“I think it was a fair result," said York coach Chris Halupka. "It was the first game of the season for both teams. The weather was ice cold and both teams didn’t have many practices outside.”

In the conference and home opener against Downers Grove North, Alyssa Kovatchis scored all three goals in the win. The sophomore forward is stepping into a more important role this season following the graduations of York all-time leading scorer Christina Ordonez and Courtney McHugh.

“Even as a freshman she was a major part of a team," Halupka said. "Now she is taking a bigger part. Scoring three goals is a major way to help the team.”

The Dukes (1-0-1) return to action Saturday at St. Ignatius, a team that recently played to a scoreless draw with York's West Suburban Silver-rival Lyons Township. After that, York will play in St. Francis' Springfest Classic at Olympic Park in Schaumburg.
