RIVERSIDE — Early in the season Riverside Brookfield and Morton are still trying to jell into a cohesive unit.

The Bulldogs won a pair of tight games to get past the Mustangs 28-26, 25-23 Thursday night in Riverside.

RB was playing its season opener before heading into the Joliet West Invite this weekend. Morton lost to Lyons Township 25-18, 25-21 on Tuesday and is off until March 30.

Senior Tim Thor-Larsen had eight kills to lead RB. The 6-foot-4 middle hitter is a new starter this season.

“Every time it’s a close game everyone gets kind of rattled so we have to pay attention," Thor-Larsen said. "Last season we had a lot of close ones, but usually our team comes through. I look forward to the next one."

The Bulldogs led 23-18 in game one, but Morton rallied with five straight points and even had two game points before RB took the game.

Morton jumped ahead 5-1, but the Bulldogs stormed back and won the match on a kill from Mike Kosik.

The Mustangs are hoping to find some chemistry with a number of players coming from different playing styles with their clubs.

“I told them at the beginning of the season you guys play at different places, but you gotta come together here and run the system that we play,” said Morton coach Tony Hornilla. “It looked better today than the last game. We tried something different and it seemed to work out. It was just a close game. It could have gone either way.”
