Letter: Democratic candidates make case for Downers Grove Township election
To the Editor,
Residents recently received a mailing from the Republican candidates for Downers Grove Township government. These candidates call themselves “ticket for the taxpayer,” but this is a deceptive label.
What their brochure does not tell you is that the Republican incumbents have increased the township tax levy each year. They do not tell you that the trustees are paid, but their once-per-month meetings often last 30 minutes or less.
They boast about lowering their salary, but do not tell you that they cut the number of their meetings in half and lowered their salaries only 20 percent after several votes on the issue.
They do not tell you that they pass a budget without making any effort to assess the actual need of any budget item, and have said that they will seek the maximum levy allowed by the tax cap, because “that is the way we have always done it.”
Township government indeed has limited responsibilities and takes a small percentage of property taxes. That does not mean that these incumbents are doing a good job of watching out for your tax dollar. On the contrary, they show no diligence in overseeing the effectiveness and cost efficiency of township programs or in managing assets.
The Democratic candidates for township offices have been attending township meetings for years, and we know we will do better. We will work harder, watch out for every dollar, assess the effectiveness of programs, engage in proper bidding and avoid duplication of services. Visit www.downersgrovetownship.org. Please vote April 9.
