DOWNERS GROVE — Downers Grove North's boys volleyball team overcame a sloppy second game to top Downers Grove South 25-20, 16-25, 27-25 in a rivalry match Tuesday at North.
A late surge in the first broke a 17-17 tie and gave the Trojans (2-0) a 20-17 lead. Anthony Puccini had a kill that made it 21-18, and three straight South miscues made it 24-19.
The Mustangs (0-1) built up eight point leads on five different occasions in the second and clinched the game on John Hanek's kill.
South also led for much of the third game before Puccini floored a kill to make it 24-24. After a Mustang net violation tied it at 25-25, Puccini tallied another kill to give the Trojans their first lead of the game since 1-0, and a South hitting error ended the game and the match.
Puccini finished with eight kills while Hanek and North's Gilius Blinstrubas both finished with 13 kills. Will Tischler had seven kills and Nick Timreck four kills for South.
The Mustangs' Jordan Pawlicki dished out a match-high 34 assists while Tom Sarver had 25 for North. The Trojans' Brooks Nevrly had 17 digs, while Tom Wymyslowski had 12 and David DeMarco nine for South.
