Baseball previews: Fenwick, St. Joseph look to do damage in 3A

Coach: Dave Hogan

2012 record: 20-14 (8-10 Chicago Catholic League White)

Top players:

Cal Laird sr. P

Paul O’Toole sr. 3B

Kyle Pullia sr. P

Next game: 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at home vs. IC Catholic

What to watch: Standout Ryan Fitzgerald, who hit .460 last year, is now at Creighton, but the Friars still have some returning talent in the offense.

Paul O’Toole hit .408 last season and struck out just six times in 121 plate appearances. The senior third basemen will be a big part of the lineup, especially considering he is the only regular that returns from last spring.

The pitching staff has more coming back. Kyle Pullia, who posted a 3.68 ERA in 45.2 innings, and Cal Laird, who will play for Emerson College in Boston, will anchor the staff.

St. Joseph

Coach: Jay Meath

2012 record: 27-14

Top players:

Pat Brown sr. P/OF

Luke Daughenbaugh sr. OF/P

Nick Genova sr. C

Trayvon Johnson sr. 3B/P

What to watch: The Chargers will be looking for a fourth regional title in four years.

Trayvon Johnson will again be one of the Chargers’ top pitchers and hitters. The senior left-hander is a hard thrower and a quick bat in the lineup.

Pat Brown returns after being used mostly as the top reliever last season. Luke Daughenbaugh is a two-way returner and catcher Nick Genova is committed to play for Quincy.
