Scimeca-Knierim take ninth at World Figure Skating Championships

Addison native Alexa Scimeca cracked the top 10 in her worlds debut

ADDISON – Addison native Alexa Scimeca and her partner Chris Knierim moved up to ninth place in the pairs competition at the 2013 World Figure Skating Championships in London, Ontario.

They were in 12th place after Wednesday's short program, but moved up three spots in the overall standings after a ninth place showing in Friday's free skate. They scored 117.78 points in the free skate to go with 55.73 points from the short program.

Scimeca and Knierim found out they were competing at worlds less than a month ago. They were the silver medalists at nationals this year and the U.S. had two spots at worlds. However, the 2012 national champs, Caydee Denney and John Coughlin, were returning to action after Coughlin was recovering from surgery on a torn labrum in his left hip and successfully petitioned one of the two spots.

When Denney and Coughlin dropped out to ease Coughlin's recovery and prepare for the 2014 Olympics, Scimeca and Knierim were given the second spot.

Scimeca and Knierim finish as the top American pair. The other American pair of Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir was 12th.
