Letter: 'Building on Excellence' has provided key improvements

To the Editor:

Your vote is critically important in the April 9 District 86 School Board election.

For the past four years, we have seen the costly results of a poor selection in the 2009 election. Dianne Barrett’s election gave the community an ill-prepared and uninformed board member who cost the district more than $50,000 in legal fees as she insisted upon her right to have access to confidential student records (she lost the lawsuit).

Although Barrett is not running for re-election, her associates are running as the slate "Friends of District 86." Be forewarned, they are anything but our friends.

I heartily endorse the experienced incumbent slate Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6 on the ballot – "Building on Excellence" (Brennan, Gorgol, Gallo, Rosenthal). This group has brought positive change to District 86 by approving projects that enhanced security at our school entrances; added state-of-the-art science labs; installed turf football and practice fields (allowing for greater and safer usage); added needed maintenance upgrades; and provided safer visitor parking and school bus pickup/drop off locations, to name a few key improvements.

This slate uses a common-sense approach and carefully approves needed projects by weighing the costs and return to our community. The opposition (Barrett and friends) vote against school improvements and seek to slash project spending at every turn. No top-ranked school system will maintain its excellence if you refuse to fund new projects.

A vote for the opposition slate is a dangerous move for those who want to maintain our top-tier school system.
