WESTERN SPRINGS — Lyons Township didn't create much offense through the run of play Thursday against Waubonsie Valley so it's a good thing Erin Fitzgerald has a knack for free kicks.

The Lions' junior, who is committed to play at Cornell, scored twice on free kicks from inside 30 yards for the game's only goals. Both shots were near the upper 90.

"I just hit it hard and it went in the right spot," Fitzgerald said. “I don’t really think about it when I shoot because when I think about it, it kind of messes me up. Basically I just look at where I want to shoot and I hit it as hard as I can because I don’t want it to go over."

The 2-0 win in the season opener came against a Waubonsie Valley team armed with a number of returners from a strong team.

LT picked up the win, but the Warriors had most of the run of play. That wasn't lost on Lions' coach Bill Lanspeary.

“We definitely didn’t control the play," Lanspeary said. "They’re awfully good, but we need to get better and get to a point where we’re knocking the ball around like they are.”

The Warriors forced sophomore goalkeeper Lidia Breen into seven saves. Breen was strong in her varsity debut, but Lanspeary still said the position is open for competition with senior Sam Kopping and junior Molly Henderson.

"This spring weather has been terrible," Lanspeary said. "We haven’t had a chance to see a whole lot. We can’t evaluate too much inside in the gym. We’re just getting outside and they’re each going to get a chance so right now she certainly did a great job with her opportunity.”

The Lions play at St. Ignatius at 11 a.m. Saturday.
