Fire damage leaves Downers Grove home uninhabitable
DOWNERS GROVE — A home in unincorporated Downers Grove was extensively damaged by fire early Thursday morning, but no one was harmed in in the 2 a.m. blaze.
The fire began in the garage of a home in the 20W400 block of Rooke Court and spread to the adjoining family room and attic area, according to officials with the Darien-Woodridge Fire Protection District.
Fire units were dispatched at 2:17 a.m. The three occupants of the home and their pets had escaped before emergency crews arrived.
The fire was under control within 40 minutes, though crews remained on the scene for several hours to overhaul the house and ensure no hidden fires remained, according to a press release from the fire district.
"This was slightly complicated by the fact that there were two cars still inside the garage," the release stated.
The source of the fire has been traced to the garage, but investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
A cost estimate of the damage was not immediately available, but fire officials believe the home will be uninhabitable for several months.
