Downers Grove District 99 candidate drops out of the race

Henry Jakobsze cited "personal circumstances" for his decision and cast his support behind Debbie Boyle, one of three incumbents in the race.

DOWNERS GROVE — One of the candidates for Community High School District 99's school board is dropping out of the race, leaving five candidates vying for the four seats.

Henry Jakobsze cited personal circumstances for his decision to drop out, and he threw his support behind incumbent Debbie Boyle.

His decision leaves three incumbents and two challengers in the race — incumbents Boyle, Terry Pavesich and Julia Beckman, and challengers Rick Pavinato and Martin Gorski. Jakobsze is the second candidate to drop out of the race after President Bill White decided not to run for re-election earlier this year.

Jakobsze made the announcement in an email to reporters Wednesday afternoon, the full text of which appears below:

"Through the process of preparing to run for the high school board, I had a unique opportunity to view the inner workings of the District 99 Board and Administration. I am extremely impressed and encouraged by the strategic plan and leadership of our district, and the high quality of education provided to the students in our community. I have developed a deep appreciation for all the efforts of the board and administration. I am very confident that our children are receiving an outstanding opportunity to learn and prepare themselves for the future.

"Regretfully, due to personal circumstances, I must withdraw my name from consideration for the District 99 Board of Education race.

"I genuinely believe in public school education and it's contribution to the well-being of the community.  Therefore, I am asking my supporters to endorse Debbie Boyle for reelection to the board. Debbie and I share many of the same beliefs of accountability to the tax payers of the community and providing the best opportunities and resources for our students and teachers.

"In her first term, Ms. Boyle has been instrumental in developing more open and transparent communications from the district, such as broadcasting board business meetings and increased disclosure of financial documents on the website that helps our entire community become better informed. She will continue to be an effective leader on the District 99 Board."
