Today, detectives announced a break in the case following the arrest or three men from Chicago.

Arrested were Nicholas Smith, 17; Dominick Brown, 22; Terry Gardner, 20. All three were charged with one count of residential burglary by Chicago police. Brookfield police said they are continuing their own investigation with the hope of adding charges pending a review of evidence by the Illinois State Police Crime Lab.

Police were alerted around 1 p.m. March 11 after a Brookfield resident reported an unfamiliar SUV parked in front of a neighbor's home, as well as an suspicious subject walking around the home in the 4200 block of Forest Avenue. The resident wrote down the vehicle's license plate number and called police.

Police later discovered a nearby home on Sunnyside had been broken into and a television and laptop computer were taken. Detectives reported they were able to connect the reported vehicle to past burglaries in the village.

A surveillance team of Brookfield detectives and the Major Case Assistance Team set up a watch of the vehicle while it was parked in front of a home on the South Side of Chicago. During the late morning hours of March 12, police followed the vehicle to the area of 3900 W. 83rd St. in Chicago and arrested three men as they burglarized an unoccupied home.
