Glenbard South, Wheaton North pledge to show respect for disabled through r-word campaign
GLEN ELLYN — Glenbard South and Wheaton North high schools participated in this year's Spread the Word to End the Word international campaign last week to encourage students and staff members not to use the r-word, or "retard(ed)."
While the campaign was different at each school, the message was the same: to show respect for those with developmental disabilities through the power of words.
"It's so important to make kids aware of these words that have a much deeper impact than they might realize," Wheaton North special education teacher Lisa DiOrio said.
