Downers Grove South alum and basketball star charged with felony robbery

A basketball phenom from unincorporated Downers Grove who had reportedly committed to Seton Hall was charged with felony robbery last week.

Jerron Wilbut, 19, of the 16W600 block of Mockingbird Lane, was charged with two other men Thursday after police say they robbed a juvenile in Clarendon Hills. Wilbut graduated last year from Downers Grove South High School.

According to the DuPage County Sheriff's Office, Wilbut as well as Kelechukwu Akub, 20, of Romeoville, and Leverenzel Booth, 18, of Darien, made plans to meet with the juvenile about 4 p.m. Thursday in unincorporated Clarendon Hills.

"Akuba, Booth and Wilbut with intentions of robbing the juvenile, let the victim into the vehicle and displayed what was believed to be handgun, robbed him of his currency and property, then released the victim from the vehicle and left the scene," according to a statement from the sheriff's office.

The three suspects were located shortly after and were arrested, according to the sheriff's office. Investigators determined that they did not use an actual firearm in the alleged robbery, but rather an item that resembled a handgun, sheriff's office spokeswoman Dawn Domrose said.

As of Monday, all three men are still being held at DuPage County Jail on $10,000 bond.

Wilbut graduated from Downers Grove South in 2012 after three years on the varsity squad. His senior year, the 6-foot-3 guard averaged 13.5 points per game and was considered a candidate for Mr. Basketball Illinois.

After graduating, he went to St. John's Northwest Military Academy, and he reportedly verbally committed to Seton Hall for the coming year.

According to The Baltimore Sun, another Seton Hall basketball commit was charged with domestic assault in August.
