Prep Roundup- Fenwick, St. Joseph boys basketball win regionals
The Friars upset No. 4 seed Marshall on the road to win a Class 3A regional championship. Fenwick beat VOISE Academy 75-39 in last Wednesday’s semifinal and beat the host Commandos 64-55 in Friday’s final. Luke Lattner scored 16 points and Scott Lindsey added 12 in the final to help Fenwick to its first regional title since 2006. The Friars take on top sectional seed Orr on Wednesday in the Riverside Brookfield sectional semifinal.
After thumping UIC Prep 90-40 in the regional semifinal, the Chargers beat Westinghouse 48-46 in overtime to win the Class 3A regional as hosts. Jordan Ash scored 17 points in the semifinal and Paul Turner scored 15 points in the final to lead St. Joseph. It was the second regional title in a row for the Chargers, which will play St. Ignatius in the sectional semifinal at Riverside Brookfield.
The Panthers beat Lake Park 52-40 to advance to the regional final against district-rival and top sectional seed Proviso East. The Pirates beat West 74-65, but the host Panthers gave East a scare after leading by five at halftime. Taylor Watkins scored 18 points, Lawrence Moore added 15 and Antoine French scored 12 to lead West. The Panthers finished the season 16-11.
Montini knocked the Roadrunners out of the playoffs by beating them 71-64 in a semifinal of the Class 3A Glenbard South regional on Thursday. Nazareth finished the season 13-14.
Senior Maggie Reilly and sophomore Jenny Mackowiak both qualified for state in the three-point showdown. Reilly made seven three-pointers in Thursday’s preliminary round at Redbird Arena in Normal to come up two short of making the finals. Mackowiak made four.
