North boys hoops builds toward future
Head coach Jim Thomas and the Trojans have a solid foundation to build on next year.
DOWNERS GROVE — A 57-46 loss to Plainfield North in a regional semifinal wasn't how Downers Grove North's boys basketball team wanted to go out.
Head coach Jim Thomas and the Trojans were hoping for at least one more game in their season, but the consolation is they have a solid foundation to build on next year.
David Edwards, a sophomore post player, and classmate Myles Farley, a starting guard, both logged heavy minutes this season. Farley left the regional game with an injury, but he figures to be a key piece to the puzzle next season and will return battle tested.
"Myles, he's a kid who makes plays for us," Thomas said. "At one point this season he had a 13-0 run for us on his ownJ so he's capable of doing some things."
Farley was named MVP at the Addison Trail pre-holiday tournament as North (11-16) won all four games there to claim the title. That came during a stretch in which the Trojans won seven of eight games as their record improved to 9-5. They went 2-11 when the calendar flipped to 2013, but four of those defeats were by six points or less.
In addition to Farley and Edwards, juniors D'Andre Walker and Ray Greco, who played extensively when Farley left the regional game, are also slated to return. Seniors like Nick Norton, Austin Walker, Deivis Skirgaila and Rimas Barsketis will be missed, but they leave behind a solid template for next year's team.
"The seniors meant a lot to our program and to our school," Thomas said. "They're great kids and they were great to work with. I told them it was a joy to grind it out with them. They believed in what we were doing and jumped in with both feet.
"The went about their business the right way. They'd show up 15 minutes early to practice and they'd know the scouting report forwards and backwards. If the young guys paid attention, they saw kids that enjoyed each other and held each other accountable."
