Nazareth Academy celebrates 'More Than a Pretty Face' for Women's History Month
LA GRANGE PARK — Inspired by other national campaigns, Nazareth Academy has chosen to focus its celebration of Women's History Month around the theme that women are “More Than a Pretty Face.”
The school will promote the message that what a woman possesses on the inside is far more important than the face she shows the world, exploring this theme through written reflection, historical research, a writing contest, prayer and daily announcements.
"We invite all of our faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni and friends to join us in this effort as we hold up the fact that women should be recognized for more than what they look like on the outside," said Nazareth Principal Deborah Tracy. "This, as we know, is especially difficult when we are a part of a culture that places so much emphasis on outer beauty and unfortunately, our young women can still get caught up in all of the pressure this represents."
Throughout the month of March, Nazareth will highlight a different woman and her effect on history each day during morning announcements. These profiles will be researched, written and read by students in Honors U.S. History.
"This gives students an opportunity to use technology (iPads) to combine research, writing and presentation skills, all around a common theme," said teacher Therese Hawkins.
Nazareth will then post these facts on its website, Facebook page and Twitter for parents and students to discuss.
During the week of March 18 ti 22, Nazareth also will highlight women from within the school community, sharing reflections of how students, teachers, board members and alumni define women as "more than a pretty face."
The week will culminate with a "Make-up-free Friday” on March 22. Many female members of the faculty and staff have made the pledge to be make-up free for the entire day. Nazareth invites its students and other women in the community to do the same.
In conjunction with the theme, Nazareth's student newspaper, The Announcer, will sponsor a writing contest. Participants will submit essays or stories using the theme and winners will be announced at the end of the month.
