Downers Grove citizens group makes endorsements for April 9 election
DOWNERS GROVE — A Downers Grove citizen's caucus has endorsed almost all incumbents for office plus a few newcomers for open seats in the April 9 consolidated election.
After interviews Saturday morning, the Downers Grove Community Advocates backed incumbents Bob Barnett and Marilyn Schnell as well as Greg Hosé for Village Council.
For Community High School District 99, the group backed incumbent school board members Terry Pavesich and Julia Beckman plus newcomers Henry Jakobsze and Rick Pavinato.
Only one incumbent in the running was not endorsed for office. School board Vice President Debbie Boyle did not respond to an invitation to appear before the caucus or provide information on her positions, according to the group.
Candidates made their case for endorsement at a caucus Saturday morning at Downers Grove Fire Station No. 2.
"Each candidate was given the opportunity to make a brief presentation and then participated in a question-and-answer session followed by a closing statement," according to the group's endorsement announcement. "All candidates were asked the same questions in the same order and were allotted the same time."
In the village council race, six candidates are running for three seats. Commissioners Barnett and Schnell are defending their seats, and they are joined on the ballot by Hosé as well as Don Jankowski, David Olsen and Susan Walaszek. One seat on the board is open with Commissioner Bill Waldack not seeking re-election.
On the District 99 board, six candidates are running for four seats. In addition to incumbents Beckman, Boyle and Pavesich, newcomers Pavinato, Jakobsze and Martin Gorski are on the ballot. Board president Bill White is not seeking re-election. Both Jakobsze and Gorski could not appear at the caucus Saturday, and they made their cases in writing, according to the group.
According to the DGCA, the endorsements reflect the candidates that most embody the caucus' nonpartisan civic outlook, and they "will serve the village with integrity, objectivity and careful consideration of all sides of all issues before reaching decisions which best meet the needs of the citizens of Downers Grove."
