Frank Wurster: Residents invited to Downers Grove Township’s open house

Downers Grove Township is one of the nine townships in DuPage County. It is the largest township in the county, both in terms of area and population.

Pierce Downer, from whom it derived its name, settled Downers Grove Township in 1832. The principal villages of this township at that point in time were Hinsdale, Downers Grove, Clarendon Hills and Fullersburg. Today, the township consists of Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, Willowbrook, Burr Ridge, Westmont, Darien, Downers Grove and parts of Lemont and Woodridge.

Local Government Week is a time to put a face to local government staff and elected officials. It is a time to promote the importance of local government to the community and see what the township has to offer its residents.

Downers Grove Township will hosting an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Downers Grove Township Building, 4340 Prince St. in Downers Grove (two blocks west of Main Street and one block south of Ogden Avenue). We would like to invite all residents of Downers Grove Township, including families with children, to come out and enjoy refreshments, including popcorn and hot dogs, and see what our township is all about.

The first full week in March is designated as Local Government Week in our state by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Residents are invited to come and see the office, meet the elected officials and office staff, and ask questions and/or bring up their concerns. You will also be able to view some of the Highway Equipment used to maintain the roads in unincorporated Downers Grove Township.

During the open house, the Highway Department will collect electronics for its recycling program. The township will also collect cellphones, eyeglasses and hearing aids for recycling.

After the open house, these items will be distributed to the appropriate organizations for re-use. We will also accept worn U.S. flags that will be taken to the American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars post for proper disposal.

We will also accept nonperishable food items to be donated to the FISH Pantry. For additional information, please contact the Township Office at 630-719-6610 or the Highway Department at 630-719-6625.
