Lemont High School Mathletes squad advances to state finals

LEMONT — The Lemont High School Mathletes squad won the regional competition on Feb. 24 and will now advance to the state finals in May.

The Mathletes took first place in seven of 10 events and finished with a score of 466 at the Joliet Junior College regional competition.

Senior Lynn Stanwyck led the group in wins, walking away with four first place medals from the regional event. Sophomore Tyler Schoell finished first individually in the Geometry competition. The Lemont High School Mathletes captured first place in Algebra I and Algebra II Written Teams competitions.

Lemont topped second-place Providence Catholic by 80 points and will now compete in the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics State Finals on May 4 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Mathletes is coached by Erin Hitchcock, Angela Marshall and Ken Suslek. The team finished among the state's top 20 in its division four straight years, from 2008 through 2011.
