Lions suffer upset in girls playoff opener
LT's season ended with overtime loss in regional semi
CHICAGO — Lyons Township's girls basketball team entered the postseason with high hopes, but the Lions were well aware of the difficulty of their playoff draw.
The deep Trinity sectional provided three shock regional winners in No. 11 seed Oak Park-River Forest, No. 12 St. Ignatius and No. 15 Proviso East. LT was the victim of St. Ignatius in the Lions' playoff opener.
LT, the No. 6 seed, had to play on the road against the Wolfpack and were upset in a wild game. Kelley McInerney made a three-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime where the Wolfpack won 58-55.
St. Ignatius upset No. 3 seed Fenwick in the regional final, 59-55.
The Lions finished the season 17-10 with a 6-6 record in the West Suburban Silver. Seniors Ashanti Davis and Sara Beck were LT's two senior starters. In all, six seniors will graduate from the program.
Sophomores Gaby Galassini and Victoria Swift will give the Lions an experienced backcourt for next season. Junior Kayla Morrissey also saw big minutes this season.
