Bolingbrook Village Board recognizes 'Spirit of Christmas' winners
BOLINGBROOK—At the bi-monthly Bolingbrook Village Board meeting Feb. 12, village officials honored several residents before passing five resolutions and motions.
Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar and members of the Bolingbrook Beautification Commission presented plaques to the winners of the 2012 Spirit of Christmas awards.
Of the 95 families who received the honor, 15 were on hand that evening to collect the award. Every family approached the podium and shook hands and spoke with Claar.
Bolingbrook Beautification Commission Chairman Phyllis Ann Ruggiero helped the mayor distribute awards and call out winners' names, expressing her gratitude for the citizens' holiday cheer and dedication to improving the community.
"This award is all about community spirit," said Ruggiero. "Residents are excited to receive the award. It is a great way to get people excited about the holidays and make Bolingbrook look beautiful."
The 20 members of the Bolingbrook Beautification Commission have been serving the community for the past 25 years. Their mission remains to promote a sense of pride and responsibility and to help create a more appealing and pleasant place to live, work and play.
Claar then detailed five resolutions to the council, and all were approved. Notably, the village plans to purchase two "jaws of life" cutting tools and implement a project in 2014 improving traffic flow at the St. James Gate and Joliet Road intersection.
The road project will be covered partially by tax dollars — $152,000 — and Homeland Security and Federal grants — $755,000.
Also Feb. 12, the Bolingbrook Village Board approved a three-year extension of the community electronic recycling drop-off center at 299 Canterbury Lane.
Claar applauded the program and its function within the community.
"At first, I was skeptical of the e-recycling center," he said. "But it has been very successful and functional; it can be used for any electronic item. I am pleased to say that we will renew the program for another three years."
The mayor also announced that three restaurants—Bok Choy, Blue Coyote and Zacatacos — will not renew liquor licenses.
The next Bolingbrook Village Board Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday.
