Doctor celebrates 20th year with Family Service
CICERO — Dr. Barbara Such sees many people every day with problems that can't be treated with a bandage or two aspirins in the morning. As program director at the Family Service and Mental Health Center of Cicero, she deals with the pain brought on by hard times in the land of plenty and the rough road of emotions those times bring.
Such, who celebrates her 20th year at Family Service this week, sees clients, primarily adults, and works with them on different issues, such as depression, bipolar disorder symptoms, grief and relationship issues. Some clients are facing changes in their lives, adjusting to illnesses and changes in personal relationships and lifestyles.
"We really have a wide variety of reasons why people come," she said. Such also supervises staff members and has administrative duties to fulfill.
Previously, Such was an elementary school teacher who taught grades four through six. She came to the clinic as part of her training for her psychology PhD, she said, and the rest is history.
In terms of challenges on the job, funding is becoming increasingly complicated.
"At this time, and not just in our agency, you have a lot more systems to work with in terms of funding," Such said. "The systems want more accountability, trying to deal with all the requirements of these funding systems, trying to deal with the financial situation of our clients and trying to provide the services these people need."
And there is a payoff, Such said.
"Knowing that you have a positive effect on people's lives, that you're helping them navigate through difficult times and they're coming out a stronger person and have a more rewarding life," she said. "For me, working with staff and seeing them grow as clinicians is very rewarding also."
