District 113A schools to participate in ‘Great Central U.S. ShakeOut’ Thursday
LEMONT — All schools in District 113A will be participating in the Illinois Emergency Management Agency’s “Great Central U.S. ShakeOut” next week.
At 10:15 a.m. Feb. 7, schools will host a “Drop, Cover and Hold On” drill to draw attention to the earthquake hazard that exists in Illinois and other states in the region. The drill offers students and staff an opportunity to set aside time to plan how they would respond in an earthquake.
Illinois is home to two major earthquake faults, the New Madrid and Wabash Valley. The day of the drill makes the 201st anniversary of the last of the 1811-12 New Madrid Fault earthquakes.
Last year, more than 2.4 million people across the region participated in the Great Central United States ShakeOut drill. More than 496,000 of those participants live in Illinois, including nearly 400,000 school children.
