Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital promotes health, wellness through free events this month
BOLINGBROOK — Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital marked its fifth anniversary Jan. 21, but hospital officials didn't spend long celebrating.
The hospital kicked off its February events lineup Tuesday with a "Men's Health" event, an informational discussion led by a board-certified urologist. During the session, Dr. Vibha Sabharway covered sexual dysfunction and other pertinent topics, answering participants' questions throughout.
The discussion is the first of several other health and wellness events in February, some focusing on physical fitness, vitamin intake and obesity. All but one are free to the public.
The sessions are one way the hospital provides to the Bolingbrook community.
"All of the events at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital are either free or offer a discounted screening," said Ronda Klocko, marketing manager at the hospital. "I'd say over 99 percent of our informational sessions require no admission charge. The purpose of these monthly events is to educate Bolingbrook residents, cost should not be an issue."
Klocko has worked for Adventist Bolingbrrok Hospital since it opened and is particularly excited about February's "Heart Month" campaign at the hospital.
"A lot of people do not realize that heart disease is the number one killer among American men and women," Klocko said. "February is 'Heart Month,' so we will be offering low cost heart screenings throughout the entire month."
Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital chair of internal medicine and director of cardiology Dr. Jim McMahon believes that, in spite of the widespread frequency, heart disease is often overlooked.
"Cardiac disease outnumbers the occurrence of all cancers combined," Dr. McMahon said. "I always look forward to leading "Heart Month" discussions, it is a way to put cardiac disease on the forefront. It a very salient issue in all households, so getting the word out to people is one of the most important things a cardiologist can do."
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital will host "Heart to Heart Womens Event" at the Bolingbrook Golf Club.
This womens luncheon will feature a "heart-to-heart" discussion, health screenings, door prizes and more. Participants will learn about female risk factors for heart disease and how lifestyle choices impact a woman’s heart.
Other events include "Surgical Options for Weight Loss," Are You Getting Enough Vitamin D," "Obesity: Taking Control of Your Health" and"Anatomy of a Workout", which will take place 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bolingbrook Recreation and Aquatic Center.
Those interested in taking part in the sessions can sign up online and create an account to stay up to date on times, locations, cost and registration instructions. Registration is required for all hospital-sponsored events.
