Seventh graders Serena Balzer and Jeremy Belingon earned perfect scores of 20 in the December WordMasters Challenge meet, a score achieved by only 180 seventh graders in the vocabulary competition that draws nearly 150,000 students each year.
Other students at West Chicago Middle School who achieved outstanding results in the meet include seventh grader Britney Prebis and eighth graders Josh Bowen, Patrick McCormack, and Tyriq Coleman. The students were coached in preparation for the WordMasters Challenge by West Chicago Middle School teachers Nick Duda and Keith Johnson.
The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships.
