WHEATON — The Wheaton City Council approved the appointment of W. Thoreson “Thor” Saline II to fill the council’s vacant at-large position during its meeting Tuesday.
Wheaton Mayor Mike Gresk recommended Saline, the only candidate for the council’s east district position in April’s election, to fill the at-large position until an elected councilmember takes over in May.
The at-large position was left vacant following former Councilwoman Jeanne Ives' resignation in November to represent the 42nd District in the Illinois House.
Former councilman and mayoral candidate John Prendiville will run for the at-large position in April’s election.
Earlier this month, Prendiville objected to fellow candidate Frank Garcia’s voter registration status, and the city’s electoral board sustained the objection during a meeting Jan. 14.
The board found Garcia was not registered to vote in Wheaton when he filed his petition Dec. 7, which is in violation of Wheaton City Code, City Clerk Sharon Barrett-Hagen said.
Garcia said in an email Sunday that he plans to run a write-in campaign after receiving the go-ahead from the DuPage County Election Commission.
